The four groups went very much to seed although Jedi, the eventual winners, were fielding a weaker team on the Saturday resulting in them finishing second behind Ro-Sham-Bo in their pool. This lined Jedi up for the nail-biting 13-12 quater final against Sheffield's Phat 'Eds who would finish fifth after the determined Leeds side stopped them from advancing any further. The sudden death last point seemed to go on forever and somehow the final pass of the game squirmed over a huge layout-D to end Phat 'Ed's title aspirations. Jedi's semi-final also proved to be a well-spirited and close game although their defence managed to shut down Mythago's well-rehearsed offense early-on and they did enough to maintain a two-point cushion through to the end of the game. Thankfully the few niggly dissagreements between individuals which did occur didn't marr what turned out to be a great semi. Elsewhere Bears gave Mohawks as close a quarter-final as Phat 'Eds had given Jedi. Sussex took an early lead to go 5-2 up before Warwick really turned on the D to haul themselves back to 5-all. Mohawks took the half 9-8 and managed to maintain this advantage to win 12-10. Perhaps the support from the Sussex sideline was too much for Bears who stared on bemused as thirty Mohawks with silly haircuts stormed the pitch to celebrate victory over the Indoor Champions. Mohawks' semi against Ro-Sham-Bo perhaps lacked some of the drama of their quarter final as the Scots let the Southerners go 11-5 up before mounting the comeback which sadly fell just short. Mohawks' offence suffered a lull to allow Ro-Sham-Bo back in the game but the title-holders were always destined for the final and won-out 12-9. Spirit of the Game was awarded unanimously to Dundee's Shooting stars who were given five out of a possible five from each of the seven teams they played over the course of the weekend. I'm still not sure what all that dancing on the sidelines was about though. In the finals, Fish beat Jedi II to the spoon and Skunks overcame Jesters to claim the 1999 Outdoor plate to match the Indoor plate which they collected earlier in the season. The top eight took shape with Far Flung (7) proving much too strong for a tired Ow! (8); Phat 'Eds (5) settling the score with Bears (6) and Mythago (3) showing great character to come through against Ro Sham Bo(4). In the Cup final one could never see Mohawks finding a way past the now unstoppable Jedi whose two late-comers, Bob and Tom, showed more flair than the Mohawks defence could handle and soon Jedi were three points up. Despite the magnitude of the event however, spirit never failed including Locks picking on some poor spectator to resolve a potentially crucial stall-out call. Leeds' player Bruce probably also deserves a mention for the most spectacular layout catch (and subsequent drop) of the entire weekend, despite this however, Leeds won 16-12 and a gracious Chewy accepted the trophy with the honest words: "I've wanted this for fucking ages."
