After three party nights in Italy, including a vomit by Colin on a restaurant table (he's still a druid at heart) and a race between Guy and Fee through Bologna with their pants round their ankles, our first game on Friday was against the London based Kiwis, KUPA. It was a good game to learn about beach ultimate, and after a hesitant start we pulled away to win 7-4. Next up were (?) whom we really played well against destroying them (?). Ultimate on sand is like nothing else. Imagine running up a muddy hill with weights around your ankles and you get some idea of what cutting is like. Passes have to be to the body not just thrown into space. Of course laying out is easy and there were some huge takes and D's over the weekend Our final game on day one was against the host team Cota Rica. It was a big game for both teams but UTI came out firing, getting an early lead. Unfortunately a lack of fitness necessary for this tournament then began to show, with the cuts getting slower and some unnecessary throwaways. Cota came back with five in a row before we thought of switching our wings offence (which they had busted). Although we pulled a couple back it was too late and we lost 11-8. Needless to say we were gutted. Absolutely gutted. Whilst Cota are a good team we felt they should have been easily beaten. However out of the disappointment came the positive. A long post match discussion where we discussed our game and how to improve it, there was no blame attached but a thorough analysis of our tactics and important lessons to be learnt. The next day saw us determined to make amends, and so we did, playing some great ultimate in sometimes windy and difficult conditions. We beat Discpuli(?) 13-2 (?), and Jet Set from Belgium 15-2 (?) to finish second in our pool enough to get in the top 16. We were then put in another pool group where we played a yank team Pele Mana. We obviously had the upper hand in fitness but they had plenty of experience and great skills. Again we took an early lead before Pele clawed back in to it with a great zone. However our sprit and desire showed and we eventually took the game 12-8. Sunday morning 9:10 am was the biggest game of the tournament. We were playing Wall City from Berlin, last years losing finalists. Bar an improbable upset else where, we had to win to get through to the quarters. We were warmed up and very psyched and took an early lead 4-1 up. Wall City didn't know what had hit them, they had been led to expect we are a bunch of wasters??!! They re-organised played some great D and capitalising on some unnecessary errors came back with seven in a row. In 45 minute games there was no time left for the comeback, and it finished 12-8 (?). We left the pitch exhausted and disappointed but with our heads high, we had played well and with determination. No one had put in less than 100%. So the highest we could come was 9th. Well we polished off Sydney 2000 from Holland 11-7 (?) and (?) (?). Sunday night was the party with an endless supply of wine, which produced a few casualties, some more druid like than others. Mondays game was a bit of a non event and we just lost it to so finishing 10th. This was simply the best tourney a lot of our players had been to, and none of us can wait till next year. It was really cool the way the other British teams supported us. With a fit & focused team we are really capable of chellenging the top teams. Everyone played really well and as Guy says the team spirit was superb throughout. The players who went have come back a lot stronger wearing the UTI badge with great pride. Special mention should be made to Sarah, who played really well, fitting quickly into our team. She made some great scores and assists and played some great D. >From this tournament onwards UTI has the potential to be a great, great team. Fun to play with and capable of winning at the highest level. BUT we must learn from our defeats as any team should, fitness was an obvious issue, too often we went up only to lose several points in a row. Congratulations must be passed on to Bliss for their tremendous display of Womens Ultimate, never letting another team take more than 5 points from them. Andy & Colin.
