Groucho Marx once said something to the effect that I wouldn't want to a part of any club that would take me as a member. This is what I think about the Sports Council non-Recognition for disc sports. This might seem absurd, but I am serious. First, they have already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they don't know their assholes from holes in the ground. Do we really want "recognition" from these stodgy old farts? Second, Ultimate has always been an "alternative" sport. It is part of its appeal. Is "recognition" really going to help us? And third, are we sure that we even want their help? Few things are really free. Are we willing to put up with the enevitable strings which will be attached with their recognition? Will it be worth what we can actually expect to receive from their recognition? In short, I am in the "sod-them" category. I think we have much better uses of our time than grovelling to those clueless bastards. For example, we could be playing more Ultimate and having more fun. This is what is best for the game. This is what attracts people more than everything else combined. ************************* Philip A Trostel p.a.trostel@warwick.ac.uk Department of Economics University of Warwick Coventry CV4 7AL England tel (44) 1203 523 034 fax (44) 1203 523 032 *************************
