I also wanted to apologise, on behalf of myself and the team, for any flak you might have received on account of us not having a fully rostered team. Because u did tell us we had to register - albeit only last week. By way of explanation; when we entered the tournament we didn't know that everyone due to play had to register and pay 25 quid, on top of the tournament fee. (That rule may well have been voted on whenever...I don't really follow these things.) So this was always going to be a problem as for at least half of the team, this was going to be the only official tournament they played in in the year. For me to insist everyone paid 38 quid for one tournament - just wasn't going to happen. So when Ben released his "you're not playing unless u register" e-mail, at the beginning of last week it created something of a dilemma. In the end we decided to "wing it". And we appreciate you taking a commonsense attitude and letting us play. After all, had we known about all this registration stuff when we entered - and organised our diaries - I guess we just wouldn't have come, and that would have been a shame, given that this was a local tournament for us. At the end of the day, the whole point of this registration thing must be to stop teams moving players about ie cheating. And theres no question that any Lurker would do anything underhand like that. That comes under the Spirit of the Game, it always has. We wouldn't wear headscarves or put nicknames on the back of our shirts either, but I guess thats more a question of taste...... There is this increasing formality in the sport - I suppose its inevitable as it grows. And presumeably there is some enthusiasm out there to commercialise it. One day we might even get referees! And I'm not complaining - I've never done much organisationally for Ultimate, other than on a team level. But for me the big attraction of Ultimate has always been the lack of formality, and the emphasis on Spirit. If that makes me a maverick, so be it. Although somehow I don't think it does. Heres wishing you, and all the players in the UK, a great summer. Keep the Spirit! Ed Leake - Lurkers __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
