Billed as possibly the biggest Women’s’ Ultimate event so far in the UK. 2 days of ferocious, fabulous, frisbee, 18 teams over two days. In Nottingham, at that lurvly new sports hall at Clifton Campus. The initial pool games set the standards with the strong dominating & inspiring and the less experienced leaping froward, many teams had never played an event without the boys and some with less experience than that. Everyone proved that you don’t need experience to have a good time and that you can still have a good time AND take it seriously Janet Hawes (Leeds+) nearly stole the day by entering 2 teams attempting to make it to both Cup & Plate Finals (but one team turned up to the wrong University, giving Sam the opportunity to do his Samaritan bit. The El Nino/Addicts (Carlisle/Newcastle) combo gained respect as a young, up and coming group by playing some hard ultimate and looking particularly young and excitable, being the Junior reps to the game, running around making it all look sooooo easy. Catherine has done a nice job there. Games ran late on Saturday making sure everyone was tired. Then the party kicked and rocked and rolled, the DJs chatted but the girls came to see Tom (Get your Videos here) Styles, but Tom wasn’t there so nobody really noticed the music. Got very drunk though (dancin’ on tables next time). By some quirk of fate and scheduling Mavis(London/Nottingham) the local heroines were in a top 8 pool and up against the likes of BAF(Evesham) and Fierce(London), no-one was going to be happy in that pool. It was nice to see them all playing the indoor season again. Having played all the seeding games on Saturday, Sunday gave everyone a goal to work for. A short day, with some of the best Ultimate I have seen in ages. At every level of the game, Old hands worked disc and young ones reached higher. Tom finally turned up and laid on the tunes and the girls looked for tables to dance on, the day kicked in and finals loomed. The Spoon Final was decided early, The Myth snatching victory from the local hopefuls. Then they demonstrated their flair in a display of spirit & entertainment, Mythago(Bristol) and Flyghtclub(Nottingham) mixed it up in Slippy-e-Mon garb. The Plate saw a Division 2 battle between local Girls, Leicester Jesters and Duffodils (Durham). Feeling ever confident the northern roses, stomped to Victory in hard and hungry game. Giants they were, let it be said, when Janet Hawes & Fierce meet face to face. North & South meeting in the middle for a strong and spectacular final with hammered bids at every opportunity. A tight game by all accounts and well spirited too fought hard and won hard. Janet opened with a flurry of points, taking the advantage and putting the Fierce women under pressure. Fierce balanced their game and almost by luck made those turnovers enough to count; then with renewed vigour, Fierce battled taking a challenging four-point lead. Janet moved up a gear and countered well; some desperate and amazing and calm plays, but ol’ girl time and an almost solid Fierce defence held them back for the decisive victory. Spirit winners Mythago did everything expected of a Spirit winning team, even down to cleaning their host house, washing up, cooking dinner, buying chocolate & a crate of beer, Random Fling’s Social Sec got a touch of his own treatment. Nice one girls… Big thanks to everyone who came, especially those who brought friends.
