We had this idea, that it would be helpful if the BUF had a safety policy. To give you some ground rules before you get to see the first draft: a) Firstly, we do not expect it to be all encompassing. What we are after is something simple, that covers the basics of what we think playing the game safely is about. b) We are aiming at something that will fit on one side A4. c) It is not something that will be binding on tournament organisers. The idea is that people are reminded of things they should be thinking about when organising Ultimate games. O.K. the following is what we have thrown together, and seems to cover most areas. Any sensible additions or deletions will be considered before a decision is made to present a final draft to the exec. I tell you now, any excessively long suggestions will be deleted unread! What we are after is constructive critisism... Ultimate Safety Policy 1. The Pitch i) (Outdoors) The Pitch should be set a safe distance of 5m away from any fixed object such as a tree or fence. It should be level with no ruts or potholes in the surface and firm enough to allow safe play. Any points of potential problems (e.g. goalpost holes) that cannot be avoided should be marked. If the ground slopes the pitch should run, if possible, across the slope. It should be clear of any dangerous litter such as broken glass or cans. Corner markers should be clearly visible, flexible and not firmly secured in place. ii) (Indoors) The surface should be level, non-slip and with no obstructions. There should be a distance of at least 1m between the outside of the pitch and the walls. Any pitch markings should also be of non-slip materials. 2. Personal Equipment All discs used should conform to BUF recommendations. Playing shoes should provide adequate support and grip, although no spiked shoes are to be worn. Players should be remined tnot to wear anything that may injure other players (eg. sharp jewelery and bulky rings). Playing kit should clearly differentiate the two teams on the pitch. 3. Public Safety Spectators and passers-by should always be at least 5m away outdoors, and 1m away indoors, from the edge of the pitch, which should be clearly distinguished. Players attention should be drawn to ensuring the safety of the general public from either the players or the discs, especially with regard to 'the pull'. 4. Personal Safety Do not play while impaired by the influence of drugs, both legal and illegal. You should not play if advised by medical authorities not to do so. 5. Injuries Should any player be injured, play shall cease until the matter can be resolved. It is hoped that there should always be a fully stocked first-aid kit, and registered first-aider available to treat any injuries. The location of the nearest hospital accident and emergency department and telephone should always be known 6. Game Play Players should be reminded of the rules governing the safety aspect of the game, that it is non-contact and that dangerous play is a foul in itself. The game may not continue if the light level is too low to allow the disc to be clearly seen. The game should also cease during a thunderstorm. 7. General Each Ultimate player should be made aware of and understand this safety policy. -- Simon Church
