Sections Covered; * The Halls * The Schedule * The Party * Medical Staff * Accommodation * Results * Lost Property * Media Coverage * ...and finally The National Indoor Ultimate Championships Edinburgh 1997 __________________________________________ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I will start with the overall opinion of the tournament - very good venue, well run tournament, attended by well behaved, hard playing players ! The Halls -------- The halls (all 3 of them) were of good size. All halls were big enough to have no walls, all be it a few metres in hall 2 & 3. Hall 1 was big and full seating for all spectators. Big pitch and high roof. The Schedule ------------ I think we have read enough about this to guess that things were not going to be straight forward for this weekend. However,to at least my surprise there appeared to very little in the way complaints about pools, seeding and who had to play their first games on Sunday morning. IMHO I think Paul and Barry did a damn fine job under difficult conditions. I even heard a rumor that as many as 10 qualifying teams from the regionals pulled out of the Finals with little if any notice - not paying or coming up with any more of an excuse than "..it's too far !". I guess these teams will never be seen in Europe. Another credit to TD Barry and his most excellent staff is that ALL games in ALL halls ran to time ALL weekend - even the on Sunday morning. The Party --------- The look of joy on folks faces as they came through the door of the party was obvious. To find this party was a challenge. To say it was out of the way was a certain understatement. The St. James center was built in the mid-seventies when concrete walls were cheap. Despite all this, most of the players turned up to bop and drink. Northern drinking laws will need a bit more practice, since a lot of folks were sloping off around midnight, long before closing time. Medical Staff ------------- This tournament, and I think many players did not realise this, had some of the best medical cover that any national tournament (In or Outdoors) has had in a long time. Both Mr Fizzy (Mike) and Doctor Leo were on call all weekend with their own fully equipped medical center, complete with ice, strapping and aspirins. These guys did a great job as a couple of players will certainly verify. The worst tournament related injury (and there were very few because of the no-walls thingy) was by Dillup from the Lurkers. I don't have the full story, but it had something to do with aggressive and unnecessary floor contact. This resulted in 3 broken fingers in his right hand. Accommodation ------------ I went home to my bed an all nights so I am not in a position to say much. Folks stayed in a range of places from hotels, B&B, YMCA to the faithful floors, although I did hear some folks actually got beds ! I am sure someone will fill in some more of the details here. Results ------- Enough of this descriptive stuff, lets get some numbers down for all you analytics out there. I don't have much and it's from memory, which does not work any more. Spoon Winners - Sneeeky's 3rd - Stan 2nd - UTI 1st - Druids The finals were tight at the start but then the Druids, using their VAST years of experience pushed ahead to win 15-9. Spirit of the Game - PICNIC (all the way from Plymouth !!! - We (Sneeeky's) did this trip a few years ago, but the other way and it IS a LONG way !). To gauge just how spirited everyone played, there were in fact 14 different teams voted for, even the Druids ! More results will appear on the Sneeeky's home page very soon. Lost Property ------------- Yes, if you were there, you probably did lose something. You ALWAYS lose something when you go to a tournament, you should know that by now. I am sure Barry or someone will post a list or a contact soon. Media Coverage -------------- We made the local free papers on page 17 with the heading "Radical spinners in town". You can guess the tone of the article (about 200 words). Actually not that bad. Hopefully text will appear on Sneeeky's WEB site soon. Also some of the finals were filmed for TV. For those into this sort of thing there will be about 2-3 minutes as follows; Channel 65 Sky Scottish Monday 24th (today !) @ 6.15 pm (you can get this channel all over Europe, if you subscribe) Photographs from the weekend will appear soon on the Sneeeky's WEB site later this week. If you have any photos you wish to be shown here, contact Barry. ...and finally -------------- This was a very, very good tournament that I and Sneeeky's hope all those that attended, had a good time ? We certainly did !!! Thank you for coming.
