Hello BritDisc,

Any players living in Brighton area:

BBC Sport have expressed an interest in making a report on Ultimate. Date
for filming looks like Sunday 7th January, now would be a good time to make
yourself known to me.

Mohawks; will any of you be around over Christmas/NY or have come back by
then? Stroke (hope your knees recovering)? James? Madz? Kate? Natatlie
"mangos"? Loopy Lewis and Little Rich - u in the area?

Voodoo, hope yous on the mend - St. Andrews Boys School, Worthing want to
take you on as a coach, you available for the 7th? Their PE teacher and
core of their team will be there. Please get in touch asap. (ps Voodoo is
injured and may not be at work - anyone got a number for him?). Sorry to
hit everyone like this but the beeb sprung this on me yesterday and now I
must sort out quick-smart - always a test for me!

Cheers,

(mental) ben
(07771 883769 over holidays - please get in touch if you are available!)

PS - I wrote the following (rant) a while ago but never sent it cos I didn't
want a flare-up - just some thoughts on the non-student debate, no need for
any response but may be something to think about...

RULE-MAKERS (is that jus Tim?): please consider:
1) is the game about excluding the young (<17/18), the experienced and the
tax-paying? I only do 1 day a week in college, but that's a 9-6 day with 10
hrs home study, by this very real definition of time spent in study, I'm
more of a student now than I ever was in my 1st or 2nd year at uni. However
I also work and would not have a problem paying a higher subscription or
registration fee to the ultimate association (26GBP/year, even 52GBP/year!),
the university, the team or whoever, as long as it meant more options to
play ultimate!
2) is "student ultimate" about funding? that is a big issue - do teams still
get funding if they field a (or multiple) part-timer from another college
and they hold a valid NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS card? If only 1,2 or 3
part-timers/experienced students were allowed there could be a selection
process.
3) Do we want to improve the standard of ultimate play in this country? In
which case let's make it as easy as possible for as many people as possible
to play as much as possible. Or, as devils advocate, is student ultimate
about keeping the numbers and the standard as low as possible?
4) Finally for the rule-makers - do we want University Ultimate or Student
Ultimate or both?

CHAOS-MAKERS:
1) let the SOTG prevail, does anyone intentionally want to break the rules?
If they do their karma not yours. SOTG would want this taken back to
thrower, and played out between the contesting teams without the ineligible
player, once the rule-makers have decided what ineligible is. That's the
first issue, and all BD should be asking themselves - what's our motivation
for division and how anal do we want to get over the dividing line? We can
thank the 2 Tims and Raj for bringing this into BD-consciousness, conflict
isn't always a bad thing - there is no progress without a struggle.
2) If in doubt the decision should rest with the TD - maybe some TD's want
to get tough, may be some don't give a fk. If anyone has a suspicion that a
player is not a student (his team members should know!) they owe it to all
competitors to report this to the TD asap, then s/he can check it out but
don't necessarily have to get nanoscopic on the definitions. This is tricky
now for Tim B, cos he took responsibility for making an on the spot
decision, as opposed to deferring the decision for consideration.
3) When I found I was going back to school I read somewhere that if your
college doesn't have a team you can play for the nearest one to you. Now I
can't remember where I read this but I did.

Sorry for takin so long once Ali F had invited me to comment ;) - what can I
say- bit busy what with work and college and ultimate and Christmas and
stuff.

Thanks also to everyone trying to push the association through - don't give
up, British Ultimate needs you!
