"we had three goals in mind when we went to worlds: have fun, pat asses,
win the tournament. we achieved them all. because we were concerned that
the spirit award might become a distraction, we made it all but
impossible for us to win by giving every team we played a perfect 10,
regardless of how many preposterous foul calls they made. we even gave a
perfect 10 to the team with the player who spat on one of our players.
the british team that won the award benefitted from playing us twice,
and getting two perfect 10's. to give you an idea of their spirit in our
games, when told we would be giving them a 10 the scorekeeper replied,
"really?" with a look of disbelief on his face.

consume all election results carefully. they don't always mean what you

This is quite a coincidence - GB Mixed (Co-ed) also spotted that the
Worlds organisers were attempting to stifle creativity by imposing a
SOTG scoring system on the players (they even tried to add a fail-safe
using the scorekeepers). Our approach was similar to yours except we
awarded all teams a perfect ZERO. We seem to have inadvertently assisted
the you in your goal of not winning the SOTG award - a happy bonus was
that we ended up winning the SOTG award ourselves!

If only you had told us earlier about your fear of winning the SOTG
award, we could have provided the reassurance to allow you to cast your
spirit votes in a grown-up fashion.

A word of warning to the well-meaning organisers:

'consume SOTG election results carefully. even the rules of fair play
can be bent.'
