The Firkin Bristol Open Disc Golf Championship
==============================================

BDGA TOUR EVENT #1 15-16 March 1997

@ ASHTON COURT ESTATE Disc Golf Courses - Somerset

by kind permission of BRISTOL CITY & COUNTY COUNCIL
BRITAIN'S NEWEST & PROBABLY MOST CHALLENGING VENUE

Sponsored by FOOTBRIDGE & FIRKIN

Designed by BUD TILTON with SIMON MOORE, NEAL PICKETT, TOM SOPER & MILES CLARKE

Greatly Assisted by RICHARD MONO, GRAHAM EVANS, GORDON MILLWARD, DANE MARSDEN,
SALLY MARTIN, BERNICE KEITH & BRIAN PRICE.

Ashton Court Estate: Bequeathed to the citizens of Bristol; over 800 acres of
"Informal Mature English Landscape" much influenced by Humphrey Repton; The
seat of the Smyths for 600 years and first granted a Royal License as a deer
park by Richard II in 1393.

Magnificent rolling fairways offer splendid vistas of city and rural hills
alike. Three hundred feet of inclination from Smyth Fields up to Fanmore Green.
Galaxies of Rhodedendron, Bracken and Brambles. Water graves at Water Catch,
Garden Pond and Cattle Dips. Natural object pins of, or amongst, outstanding
specimen trees of towering Wellington Redwood, Maple, Beech, Lime, Yew, Cedar,
Cypress, Magnolia and Scots Pine (well ... some do!) plus venerable Oak and
Spanish Chestnut pre-dating the Treaty of Glasgow 1502 when James IV Legalised
golf!

3 x 18 + 1 x 12 = 66 holes!

Swoon! as you reach the Apogee at Fanmore Green.
Quake! as you encounter Ridge 'n' Ledge, Ledge 'n' Gully, Bracken Ridge.
"When shall we three meet again?" when the Hurly Burly's done!
Admire! Greville Smyth's View 300 yards and a 70 foot drop to the pin (which is not in view!)
Curse! when Ha-Ha has the last laugh.
Respect. Cannizaro. We did: the whole fairway is O.B.!

Reminiscent in parts of the cunning of Whitcombe, the ruggedness of Mull and
the surreal Cannizaro with a sprinkling of agrophobic holes for light relief.

Points are at stake but please just come and treat yourself and be our guest
at the inaugural and auspicious Firkin Bristol Open DGC 1997

Small Print !
=============

Daylight hours will be fewer than at any other tour event i.e. GMT not BST.
The courses are also longer and more hilly than most. To use our time
efficiently we ask you to register in advance and arrive promptly on both days.
Also the groups will be sent out on Saturday morning in BDGA Tour '96 points
order - higher paced, therefore fewer shots and quicker, first - with
players encouraged to keep up with the group in front. Any laggards will
miss out on time @ lunch! For the second round, again, the leaders will go
first.

On Sunday this will be reversed so all players will have some chance to see the
finalists in action. All players are expected to complete the championship with
a final round of 12 holes. The players meeting will be asked to decide upon a
"staggered" - as Saturday + final - or "shotgun" start on Sunday morning. As TD,
and having considered the options, criteria and time factors, I favour
"staggered" thus the better your Saturday scores; the longer your lie-in!

In any event this is a new event, new venue, new guidelines and there will be
public at large. So, your general forbearance is kindly requested with helpful
suggestions welcome, preferably afterwards.

The cafi will provide breakfast both days. The Smyth Arms will offer hot,
filling lunches both days. The Footbridge & Firkin will be offering a
"Curry 'n' Pint" special on Saturday evening and as they are sponsoring the
event by way of defraying some of our costs, we'd be obliged if you took
up this deal and also enter the beer race.

There is unfortunately no camping available but plenty of scope amongst the
hospitality of local players. Hotel and/or B&B details will be sent upon
request along with directions once we've received your entry fee. You are
encouraged to arrive on Friday and practice rounds can be arranged by 'phone.

There will be a trophy for the Open Champion and where appropriate and/or
expenses/sponsorship allow we will endeavour to provide trophies and/or prizes
for the following:
Finalists
Divisional winners
Longest drive
Closest to pin/Ace
Most improved round ( par
Highest placed amateur / non-BDGA member
3 pint / yard of ale challenge
Fantasy league
Spirit vote (WFDF definition)

Most penalty strokes

Tournament entry fee #10 inc. BDGA player tax
Please add #1 for non-BDGA member. Please deduct #2 for unwaged / student /
junior / tax-dodger! Any profit will not exceed the greater of expenses or
prize money and will be used to develop Britain's first public course.

Cheques payable to N. W. Pickett and sent to :
10 Christina Terrace, Merchants Rd., Hotwells, BRISTOL. BS8 4QB.
to arrive no later than 2nd post Friday 14th March.
Due to limitations on daylight hours it may be necessary to restrict entry so
please enter early to avoid disappointment. Please don't arrive without entering
in advance or at least phoning first.
If you prefer to send #10 cash we will collect/refund balance on Saturday.

When entering please state the following where appropriate:
Name. Address. Phone no.(s). Email. Division. BDGA membership no..
Discount eligibility. Accommodation preference. Vegetarian (lunch)

NB	This will be the first BDGA event on public land. Basic common sense
and courtesy will mitigate almost all potential problems. However,
accidents do happen. BDGA members are covered by Public Liability Insurance;
non-BDGA players are not and may therefore be asked to sign a disclaimer.
