As for the suggestions of having a top 16 format at nationals, the reasons against this are the same reasons for having a top 8 division at the tour. Last weekend at Southampton my team, UTI, played five matches, each to 17 or 19 points. We had very competitive games against each of the other 'top 4' teams, as well as two other less close but very worthwhile matches against Red and Purple. Even assuming the 'top 4' all made the semis, you wouldn't have been able to predict who would play who, nor who would make the final. There's no way you could get all that into a 16 team, two day tournament. Either games would have to be more and shorter, or the format would be more structured e.g. 1st and 4th seeds could not meet in the final even if both won all their games. I hope to see Catch in the top 8 at nationals however it comes about, a 'Group Of Death' might liven up Saturday a bit. But it's more important to maintain the quality and integrity of the event. And besides, the BUF Ultimsixteen Tour's a crap name. Having said that, I don't see any reason not to have a 5-12 crossover at nationals. Alex UTI -----Original Message----- From: Aftershock [mailto:jbc102@york.ac.uk] Sent: 29 June 2000 13:05 To: BritDisc Subject: Catch 22 While the debate still rages on about Catch: If they had turned up to Towcester with only three players (for some obscure reason) and subsequently lost all their games (might not have happened, as my team lost 15-1 against 6 fusion players!), then wouldn't they be in a similar position (i.e. maybe not able to qualify for top 8, but 'clearly' one of the top 4 teams). Would 'everyone' still be wanting them to be bumped up? They can still make it on their own merits, so why the need to let them in even if they fail.
