Played all weekend under gloriously sunny skies the event saw 31 teams battle it out to be champions. The initial group stages saw few surprises with most teams playing to their seedings. A notable exception were Northern Lights who with excellent victories over Mwnci See and Strange Blue came top of their pool. The final games on Saturday saw the top 16 playing off for the quater finals. Pre tournament favourites Warwick Bears, Ro-Sham- Bo and Phat Eds all saw off their challengers with relative ease. After a series of tough quarter finals in which the Mohawks ran the Bears close before eventuaally losing in the cap the semi's stood as.. Ro-Sham-Bo v Jedi Phat Eds v Bears A much underestimated Leeds team had so far gone unoticed. With some inspired defence and accurate hucking Jedi took an insurmountable early lead and while Ro-Sham-Bo came back strongly in the second half of the game it proved too much and a jubilant Jedi team had got the chance to defend their trophy in the final. The Bears, Phat Eds game was always likely to be a tough game and so it proved with a number of " interesting " calls characterising the early exchanges. Bears came out with their typical rage and steamed into a 4-0 lead thanks to some safe hands from Tom, Voodoo and Norm. Phat Eds changed their defence in response and started playing some Junk in what was becoming a tricky lead. The lead was eventually eroded and Phat Eds took a time out with a 9-8 lead. Switching back to man the final few points were frantic with numerous turnovers but Phat Eds won through to make it an all Yorkshire final. The final was by all accounts a classic after establishing an early 2- 0 lead the Phat Eds allowed themselves to be distracted and with Ben Silk and Bob leading the line Jedi struck back to take a three point lead which they then held to take the half 10-7. After the fhalf the Phat Eds raised their game and with key Jedi players tiring they took advantage and at the hooter the game was tied 11-11 with a two point cap. Jedi took the lead after a Jo Bolton point block on the Phat Eds line allowed an easy score and after turning over again it looked like a Jedi victory. However great handling from the Phat Eds back three of Steve Higgins, Karl Guard and Jesper Snoorgard kept the Phat Eds in it and the game went into sudden death. Jedi in possesion lost control of the disk on the halfway line and after working it into some space a huck in the zone allowed Dave Sealy to come down with the winning score.
