The twenty teams entered was a record and alot of congratulations for Phat 'Eds and Bears for entering 9 teams between them. The opening days pool games had few surprises although in the big game of the day, Jesters vs. Mynci See ended in a draw leaving them tied on both points difference and points scored. During the party later that night the two rematched head to head. Alex vs. Joe, Ro-Sham Boing for the top spot in the pool. Alex won two to one leaving Mynci See as the pool winners. The party was held in the Star and Garter with the landlord enthusiastically challenging anyone in the pub to a three pint challenge. The drinking games by Jesters and Fingers 6 seemed to played with no mercy given, and the pool table was the scene of much trash talking. The yard of ale attempt from one of the Bears was at best described as brave but after the highlight of the Ro-Sham Bo and a rumoured 16.6 second three pint challenge the party faded, although not in volume as the rowdy hordes of players drifted apart. The 9am start for the cross-overs had only one shock as Hulltimate lost out on their top eight spot to Phats'n'Small. Hull took an early lead but Phats'n'Small showed great passion on D and more composure on offence to win comfortably. Fingers 6 vs. Mynci See threatened to be a Stan vs. Tim battle of skying as the two teams traded to 5-5, but Mynci See raised there game and didn't look back. Jesters also failed to qualify for Nationals as Purple Haze pretty much outplayed them on both D and O and never looked anything but comfortable to grab a semi place. The semi finals were hard fought but never close. Phat 'eds beat Mynci See 15-3 in a well spirited and highly enjoyable match. Bears were 2-0 down to Purple Haze but turned then turned it on to win very easily indeed. Unfortunately for Bears, Norm had his nose broken in a collision with another player and was out of the final. Before both the Final and the Plate Final (both fimiliar Bears vs. Phat 'Eds match ups) was another Bears vs. Phat 'eds game for 13th place. Easily the most exciting game of the weekend, as Care Bears scored three times in the last two minutes to tie the match at 6-6. Sudden death was thrilling as Phattastic played the most patient offence easily making fifteen passes to get to the zone. Care Bears twice got blocks and forced errors to turn over Phattastic and then hammered a disk down pitch to get a 3 on 1 by the zone. An amazing D by Phattastic and more patient offence and then a juggled catch by Tim(?) in the zone, much to the crowds delight, gave 13th place to Phattastic. A special mention must go to the unfortunately named Pooh Bears as they spent the whole of Sunday playing for the Spoon with ineligble graduate teams, who had already spent the day before beating most of the top eight. I know very little of the Plate final as the warm up to the Final ran concurrently to it, but I think Too Phat beat Teddy Bears without ever being in too much trouble. The final itself was as good a match of Student Ultimate as there has ever been. The two teams traded with each other to 5-5. Both teams were giving everything and Phat 'Eds thought they had made it 6-5 but there was an earlier call on the play. Phat 'Eds turned over and Bears scored, and then scored the next point. 7-5 and Phat 'Eds called a time out with only 6 minutes remaining. The cap was added at 8-6 to Bears after more fiercely competitive offence and defence. The superior zone play was now showing by Bears as they bladed twice into the zone to come out 10-6 winners for the fourth consecutive year. Both sides look very strong for the Nationals yet again. See you at the Finals, Jon Phat 'Eds 1. Yogi Bears 2. Phat 'Eds 3. Purple Haze 4. Mwnci See 5. Jesters 6. Fingers 6 7. Superfly 8. PhatsnSmall 9. Too Phat (Plate Winners) 10. Teddy Bears 11. Hulltimate 12. Mwnci Do 13. Phattastic 14. Care Bears 15. Jest Do It 16. Pudsey Bears 17. Pooh Bears (Spoon Winners) 18= 1 Phat Diver Humbertimate Fickled Fingers Spirit as ever was great throughout the tournament. This was demonstrated by a wide spread of votes resulting in a four way tie. However, after a recount the of Spirit of the Game was awarded to Mwnci See. Thanks to Jesper for organising the party at short notice, Rob for sorting out the accommodation, all the Phat 'Eds who hosted teams and everyone else who helped out with scoring. Good luck to all the Midland teams at this years finals. Si Weeks Tournament Director
