We've all probably made our fair = share of bad calls, but on this one, I have to agree with Simon.=20 Catching the pull gives the offensive team such an advantage, that you = have to expect some sort of penalty if you screw it up. When it happens = to you (you look up to see who to make that first pass to, the wind = blows, and it's all over), it is such a bad feeling, but you learn from = it. I've seen teams drop the disc, pick it up and carry straight on, and = the other team be too timid to call it. By all means, get on your knees = and beg if you drop the pull, but don't ASSUME you can just carry on, = and don't rant on about bad spirit just because they choose to call a = rule. I've seen this happen too often at junior tournaments, so this year, I = issued a simple set of the more obscure rules that everyone plays to, = but you have to read beyond the 10 simple rules of Ultimate to find. It = worked! Flowering Garden dropped the pull against Bone, and tried to = play on. Sammy shouted at them from the other end, grabbed the disc off = of them, and made the point. Flowering Garden looked a bit annoyed for = about 2 seconds, and then accepted it. They have learnt something from = that. The only comments from the crowd were along the lines of, "Well, = that will teach them" and "It is a close game, you've got to call that". There is room for flexibility though. If you're trouncing a new team, = and they drop the pull, stop the game, explain the rule, and let them = off if they didn't know it. Many people knock the disc to the ground not = realising it's a fumble.=20 However, I have seen teams pull the disc like a guts disc, deliberately = aiming at someone who isn't awake trying to get a deflection and a = turnover. This has to be deemed as bad spirit, and I doubt if even Catch = would do it :) (What happened to that lovely team that used to win = Spirit prizes occasionally? Answers on a postcard to Si).
