This annual event is for competitors aged 35 and over - it regularly attracts players in their sixties and seventies ... that's "years of age" rather than "total taking part"! But make no mistake, the competition is fierce while extremely friendly. Players are separated into their age divisions as follows: Masters: 35 - 44 Grand Masters: 45 - 54 Senior Grand Masters: 55 - 64 Legends: 65 and over! In the Masters division there were about 25 competitors - my performances were as follows: 1-Accuracy 10+14 (two rounds cumulative) = 7th [could (should) have reached the final] 2-Discathon 6:32 4th place -> SEMI[20] 6:20 (fastest second place finisher) 5th place -> FINAL[5] 6:31 3rd [had serious chance of winning] 3-Disc Golf 59+54+53 (three rounds cumulative) 11th [should have done a fair bit better] 4-Distance 167m[*] + 153m (two rounds cumulative) 1st place -> FINAL[5] 138m 3rd [really should have won, but as for SCF arm & body too knackered by Saturday] 5-DDC found local partner; won 1 & lost 5 7th [my partner had never played before] 6-Freestyle found local partner, but played poorly = 7th [probably my weakest event] 7-SCF (MTA+TRC) 7.99s + 52m + 8.17s + 46m (two rounds) 2nd place -> FINAL[5] (FINAL) 10.37s + 38m 4th [arm & body too knackered by Saturday] OVERALL (combining results from all 7 events) 5th [*] New personal best - beating my previous best of 164m set in 1992! Results and photographs can be viewed at the event website: http://www.dtworld.com/masters.htm ====================================================================== [2] The "WFDF World Overalls" were held in Kalmar, Sweden (July 1999). This event happens roughly once every two years and is open to all comers - i.e. there are no age restrictions! A number of the USA Masters players persuaded me to attend this year since they expected it would be particularly well attended - they were not wrong! The divisions on offer were as follows: Open: no restrictions Women: no age limits In the Open division there were about 100 competitors from 12 nations - my performances were as follows: 1-Accuracy 9 (I didn't make 2nd round!) =53rd [no real excuse, but the 8am start was tough!] 2-Discathon 5:54 + 6:16 16th place -> SEMI[16] 5:26 7th [better than I could have dreamed!] 3-Disc Golf 48 + 52 (two rounds cumulative) =14th place -> SEMI[16] +25 (extra 9 holes also cumulative) 14th [overjoyed to make the semi!] 4-Distance 157.0m + 141.0m (two rounds cumulative) 8th place -> SEMI[10] 141.0m = 6th [missed out on the final by 5 metres!] 5-DDC with local partner, Bobbo Karlsson won 2 [+2 walk-overs] & lost 11 18th [we won some crucial games in a high calibre field - gained good experience] 6-Freestyle with USA partner, Dan "Stork" Roddick =19th [Stork's mastery certainly saved me we finished with a rare "Flamingo F***"] 7-SCF (MTA+TRC) 12.46s[@] + 57.00m + 8.89s + 26.35m 23rd [poor second round meant I missed the semi] OVERALL (combining results from all 7 events) 14th [@] New personal best - also the best MTA of the whole week and allegedly a new British Record (beating Derek Robins' 12.44s set many moons ago)! Final results (and maybe photographs) can be viewed at the event website: http://www.kfk.org/wfdf-99/ ====================================================================== And now that my throwing arm is all warmed up, I'm off to the World Ultimate Club Championships in St Andrews with Chevron Action Flash. In addition to being their token "old git" (I prefer "STM"), I imagine that I will be keeping their water bottles filled - its the least I can do since I spend most of my time ripping the p*** out of them ;-) The rumour that I am the Chevron player "most likely to pull" is perhaps only partially true ;-} Thanks for reading this far. Hope you're enjoying the summer. Cheers, Sam Neilson.
