There seems to be a bit of confusion between the proposed London Summer League, and the Clapham Thursday night pickup games... The confusion is this: we're abandoning the "league" part of the LUS which we've had the last two years. It's a lot of work collecting names and organising everyone into teams, and if some people suddenly stop showing up it can knacker an entire team. The LUS league would be fun while it lasted, but tended to fall apart eventually one way or another. So Thursday nights are now pickup only. It's just too unfair to ask anyone to organise it all if it's going to collapse after four weeks. Perhaps, whenever we have two games, we can arbitrarily keep it divided into a "serious" game, and a less serious one. However, there now seem to be enough teams and players in London to start a REAL summer league, as a completely separate entity to LUS. This is partly so that London "geo-teams" can gain some additional competitive playing experience outside of the Tour. It may also encourage the formation of new local teams - I've personally met or heard from quite a few players who would like to play Ultimate, but can't make weekend tournaments due to other commitments (and as a result don't play at all). It's also less of a headache to organise as the teams themselves are responsible for making sure they have enough players, getting started, keeping score, etc. Once again though, it's pointless organising a summer league if teams aren't going to see it through. It's easy for a team to say "Yeah, we'll do it", but please make sure you have enough players who are honestly prepared to stick with what is after all not a HUGE commitment. I would have thought that 11, preferably 12 reasonably committed individuals was a bare minimum. If any teams need an extra player or two, I have a list of people without teams who would like to play in the league, which I can forward to you. There are also enough "spare" people to form a whole team themselves - at least in theory. We'll set it up with as few as four teams. Games will be scheduled for weeknights (probably avoiding Thursdays) but if teams want to rearrange a fixture by mutual agreement then that's fine. Okay, so having said all that, let me repeat the invitation: Would your team like to play in a London Summer League? ------------------------------------------------------- Teams can either be your usual BUF-recognised lot, or if your team isn't London-based, throw together a team with your friends just for the league. Anyone who needs a few more players, I have a list of "spare" people who want to play. To register your team's interest, I need to know: * The name of the team * Details of a team contact (name, telephone, e-mail) * Which of Clapham Common or Regents Park you'd rather use as a "home" ground (which is easiest for the majority of your players to get to? If you don't have a preference then fine). Fixtures will be scheduled for weeknights (because weekends are a precious commodity for most players). The league will hopefully be finished by the end of July, and you will likely have a few "off" weeks with no fixture. Please make sure you have enough players before entering (see above). If you are a "spare" player... ----------------------------- ...and you'd like play in the league, let me know and I'll put you on the list (I could do with your name, phone number, e-mail address, and a rough idea of where you live/work) DEADLINE FOR EXPRESSING AN INTEREST IS FRIDAY MAY 28th. ------------------------------------------------------ If not enough teams have entered by then, we'll shelve the idea until next year. Come on folks, various individuals have said what a great idea this is -- now we need to see you putting your team where your mouth is (?). You have eight days... In the meantime, see you Thursdays.... http://www.ultimatum.demon.co.uk/lus/ thanks Paul --------------------------------- Paul Hurt Editor, Ultimatum paul@ultimatum.demon.co.uk http://www.ultimatum.demon.co.uk
