Message-ID: <961216152059_101336.3664_GHW80-1@CompuServe.COM> Sender: owner-britdisc@csv.warwick.ac.uk Precedence: bulk As Andy C has already said, Southampton Indoors proved to be a great tournament with the skunks being excellent hosts once again. This year the skunks had hired a second hall which gave everybody the luxury (?) of more and longer games. Format for Saturday was two pools of eight with everybody playing everybody else in their pool once (7 games - just on Saturday). Top four from each pool went through to the top 8, bottom four played off for the bottom eight. Surprises on the Saturday came from both pools with Chevvy failing to clinch a top 8 spot from the pool A and Harlem (Monks indoors) meeting the same fate in pool B. Unsurprisingly, these two teams would meet in the plate final. Top 2 in pool A was Druids and UTI respectively, the Druids managing to beat UTI, their closest rivals on the Saturday by a point. Morning Wood, already less 2 due to injuries to Kean Marden and Tef (dislocating his shoulder for the third (?) time this season) took the third spot and Blue Arse Flies were the team who squeezed out Chevvy for fourth. In pool B, Catch 22 masquerading as "Some Maroon" looked useful and took the top spot, closely followed by the Mr. Men. After that it all got messy in pool B but a win for the Village People against the Strollers in the dieing seconds of the game straightened things out and it emerged that the skunks (Mmmmm? ;-)) and Village People made up the complement of four and Harlem had lucked out. Sunday would see us all playing six more games, four against the competition from the other pool who had come to join us and then two playoff games. (I can't comment on the bottom eight 'cos they were in the second hall). The skunks were obviously still "buzzin'" after the obligatory party at Jesters nightclub (Excellent also) and beat the Blue Arse Flies, claimed a draw against Morning Wood and pushed UTI to within two points (9-7 I think). Druids, it appeared, seemed to cruise to the final relatively easily whilst UTI made hard work of it, having a second close call against Some Maroon. Morning Wood's injury curse had not lifted and Katey Forth found herself having a closer relationship with a wall than she would have liked - a knock that put her out for the rest of the tournament. Hence, come the playoffs, half of skunks one traded red tops for blue and played alongside their opposition. At one point it was Skunks 1 vs Skunks 1 with Nick Haslam being the only Morning Wood player on the pitch. Funnily enough, the Skunks won. Paul Holden of the Lurkers who had picked up with the Blue Arse Flies inflicted the curse of his former team on his new found team mates. They had to meet Village People twice, once in the crossover games and also in the first round of playoffs. The first game resulted in a hard fought draw. The second saw the scores tied at 7's at time, BAF in possession. The disc was checked and Village managed to turn it over and score for the win. Both were excellent games played with great spirit. Morning Wood's troubles were not over yet though and in the 7th/8th playoff against the Blue Arse Flies, E-J Slater lost her balance going for a disc and back pedalled into a wall, an injury that looked particularly nasty but thankfully one that she managed to get up and walk away from. Minutes later Nick Haslam discovered that running into a door really wasn't the way to get it open and, yes, he really should have pushed that bar. He was carried off the pitch and did not play again. Claire O'Sullivan and Andy Challis, the only surviving members of the team must have been having kittens about the journey home!! Of the two finals, the plate was the more entertaining - a very close fight between Chevron Action Flash and Harlem. But as they had done earlier in the day, CAF clinched it with a score in the dying seconds, pipping Harlem by just the one point. UTI tore away with the final, going from 2's (I think) to take seven points straight, before going into their customary fade. This time, the fade came late though and there was not enough time on the clock for the Druids to pull it back although, to their credit, they took four in a row to make the score a respectable 9-6 at time. Steve Shipley won the MVP award, made a cheesy acceptance speech and got a crate of beer for his efforts. Bears won spirit. The standard of play was high and there was great spirit shown by all teams present, both ingredients making this a thoroughly enjoyable yet highly competitive tournament. Thanks must go to all the Skunks for putting on yet another excellent tourney. Thanks especially to Jo Dunckley and Fat Phil for all their hard work. I don't know if there were any hiccups but it sure didn't look like it. A very smooth and professionally run tournament, I think the longest wait we had between games was an hour and twenty minutes which was great. Condolences and best wishes to all of Morning Wood, especially Katey, I wish you all a speedy recovery so that you may be back and playing again soon. Results: Final: UTI 9 - 6 Druids 1. UTI 2.
