The Headington School Horrors made their tournament debut in the home comforts of their school gym, a quality sports hall opened earlier this year, and encountered what pundits call a learning curve. On that round robin curve waited Red (Leic), the combined talents of the Dolly Mixtures (Leeds) and Strange Blue (Camb), The Wild Oxford Women!, Hint of Lime (Gosport) , Flowering Garden, this years class from the St Philo's 'ultimate academy'(Carshalton), Minx, Elle, and the Funky Nuns(NFA). After Saturdays play Minx and Elle emerged, as expected, as front runners. Minx's O' was particularly scary, ruthlessly converting possession into goals. Having defeated Elle in the R/R, Minx were virtually assured of their place in the Final ,Elle, who had lost their sub to injury, still needed to avoid upsets against the Nuns and Flowering Garden before they secured qualification. This made the Nuns/Flowering game effectively the 3/4 playoff, and as such it produced a cracking match. The Nuns struggled to stay with fast running interplay of the St Philo's, but stayed close through adventurous cutting and a superior long game. Then as it seemed the Nuns were about to turn the game St Philo's Rebecca Stokes took to the air to make a big defensive play, which put the game and third place firmly back on the Garden path. In the final Elle determined to put Saturday's defeat behind them and went out looking confident. The Minx O' was as sharp as ever, and after initial trading began to take control. Elle stepped up a gear on D' but the zipped accurate passing of Tara Jewel, Clare O'Sullivan ,and EJ Slater, often left the tiring iron Elle defenders over committed, giving Minx the space to make throws to their creative up-pitch cutters. Some excellent combinations between Sue Underwood and Helen Myers kept Elle's heads up and their O' moving but excellent finishing by Minx pulled them clear to their eventual 14-9 victory. And what of the Headington Horrors. Their 0 and 8 record had not disheartened them, they learnt, and enjoyed the opportunity to play against, and with ,some of the top women players in Britain. They returned to their rooms with the "diet busting" spirit prize, well deserved for their energetic enthusiasm, and entertaining moments of matchplay, as well as for their efforts to keep competing, their respect for the other women, and their indubitable joy of play.
