SFA Indoors - Tournament report

Having vowed never to play indoors again, I found myself attending one
of the first indoors of the season. Indoors can place some real abuses
on your body (not just playing) but has a fun community spirit which
was very much alive at this tournament. First of all thanks to Kevin
and SFA for putting on this event.

The inspired move of starting the tournament at 12.00 midday on
saturday allowed us for once to get up a reasonable hour and still be
on time for our first game, which for Red turned out to be the first
game of the tournament. 12 teams were there in all. No new faces, but
a few old ones in unusual surroundings (i.e. Nolan, of BGA/Shotgun,
Debbie Salmon with a pillow shoved up her t-shirt... you weren't
fooling anyone!). I lie actually there was one new team from
Farnborough itself called winning losers who were playing for just the
second time ever!

The competition was split into two pools of six and was structured in
such a way as you could loose all you games in the pool but still win
the tournament! Taking advantage of this we went out on fire and lost
our first two games against Lurkers (too green) and BGA (new dangers).
Being beaten by BGA was a new pleasure with several kids under 14yrs
and 5ft simply running us round in circles - watch out! After this
rude awakening we got it together and won the rest of our games to
finish fourth in our table, Stanley Peaks, Forever Hopeful and Angels
made up the remainder of the table in which no-one clearly stood out.

The other pool was exciting with Mr Men, Blue Arse Flies, Playthings,
Zebedees, SFA and Winning losers. The favourites Playthings and MrMen
had to be happy trailing to the Blue Arse Flies after a notable
performance by Merrick who was unstoppable in the endzone. If they
ever got in trouble up went a hammer and if it was feasibly catchable
it would be, with many a defender frustrated. I remember them last
year at there first ever tournament and the difference is astonishing!

Then came the party. Kevin had arranged for a bar at the officers mess
at the local MOD. Security being what it is we had to go to the front
gate and phone the millitary police on a number Kevin had given us....
Unfortunately he gave us the wrong number (nob). Eventually he worked
out why no-one was in the mess and sent the MPs to let us in..... the
prize was beer at a pound a pint, a game of Chubby Bunnies (respect to
anyone who can put that many marshmallows in their mouth!) and beer
races. The locals - winning losers - won the lot!

The second day started at nine with the final pool games after which
the top two from each pool went straight into the quarters with the
bottom eight playing cross-overs for the remaining four quarter final
slots. Nothing contentious happened here. I can't remember which
teams met in the semi's, but we (Red) had a tough game against the
champs of day 1 BAF to knock them out and go through to semis along
with Zebedee's, Mr Men (who were by now a different team ....
literally) and Playthings. We met Mr Men in the first semi losing out
7-5 in a frantic battle while Zebedee's suddenly learnt how to play
controlled/steady ultimate to defeat Playthings by a point. As we kept
on reminding Zebedee's the real final had been our semi with Mr Men
since we were obviously the two best teams there.... for some reason
this seemed to spur them on to new heights in the final. In a very
tight game Mr Men came out just in front with Zebedee's "close but yet
so far" from their first ever tournament win.

Forever Hopeful in their first outing one the spoon with Zebedee's
deservedly winning the Spirit trophey. To re-iterate Chris's words at
the prize giving (yes he actually said something that made sense!) this
was one of the best spirited tournaments I've been to in a long time
(and also very competitive).

Spot on.
