Being a junior ultimate player myself I have found it difficult to try and form a team and enter tournaments . Firstly the lack of tournaments for juniors last year meant that it was difficult to find somewhere to play . I was impressed by the increase this year however . Yet there are real problems invloved with playing in a tournament , transport for instance . We don't all have our own cars , and can rarely afford to travel far distances to play . More importantly though the dtaes of junior tournaments are very awkward . For instance there was one recently at Cambridge I think , a few weeks ago . Most juniors have exams at this time of the year and can't be playing ultimate for a whole weekend , they may want to but most of their parents would object . The one cancelled this coming weekend is just after the exam period for most juniors , but it is still in term time and this causes problems as well . If they have to travel a far distance to get to the tournament it eats up the whole of their weekend , they may have homework to do and it may prove difficult to get back for school on Monday morning , or even arrive on time at the tournament . I think the solution lies in arranging more 1 day tournaments for juniors and try to arrange them at convenient times , during half-term or Easter and Summer holidays . I also think that junior teams should be allowed to play in the Student finals , these have regional qualifiers which would make it easier for them to travel to . I know many would object to this so if a regular junior finals event could be established , similar to the Student and Open finals but perhaps being just one tournament , then this would also give juniors something to work towards rather than just hanging around waiting for a junior tournament to be announced . More encouragement to juniors to come and join in one weekend tournaments such as Ross-on-Wye would be nice also . Any of these things would be a substantial improvement on the current situation . Phew , glad I got all that off my chest . Cheers , Rupert ------------------------------------------- Rupert Stokoe rupes@bigfoot.com -------------------------------------------
