Here is the long awaited tournament report of the 1998 National Student Outdoor Finals. Last weekend saw the biggest (to my knowledge) student outdoor finals ever held. 28 teams in all were due to play although by the end of Sunday only 26 remained. The Skunks had to pull out during Saturday due to injuries, a broken down car and a driver who had to go home. As a result the pick up team was also disbanded to keep a nice round number of teams. All this made for some interesting rescheduling and tested the bottom ten teams fitness levels to the limit. Well done to the likes of No Frills who had to play 5 games on the trot on the Sunday. To compensate for that hiccup the weather on both days was unexpectedly good. Clear blue skies were complemented by a stiff wind on the Sunday to sort out the wheat from the chaff. It certainly aided Mohawks four man cup that they had clearly been practicing. All of the big guns, Sorcerers, Jedi, Mohawks, Ow!, Mythago, Sneekys and Bears made it through their pool matches and the only major upset was Phat 'Eds stealing the sixth seed spot away from Far Flung. The indoor winners and number one seeds, Flying Sorcerers, were severly understrength though and playing iron man due to the weekend coinciding with a major social event in the Scotland calendar. All was nicely poised at the end of Saturday and all that remained for the day was to get thoroughly bladdered. A few teams opted to stay in drinking milk and eating quiche, but the party had a big turn out. Prior to that in the Dry Dock there was even the traditional three pint challenge to get the heads spinning early on. On the Sunday again the results tended to follow the seedings with Sorcerers, Jedi and Mythago (the top three seeds) proceeding to the semis, though not without some good battles in the quarters. The tie of the quarters was expected to be Ow! versus Mohawks in the 4th v 5th quarter final. However, Mohawks showed they really meant business as they disposed of Ow! without too many problems. Mohawks' mood continued in the semi as they also put an end to Sorcerers bid for indoor and outdoor success. Mythago joined them in the semi, but it seemed that their, by now, seven man squad, were struggling after tough quarters and semis and could not halt the Mohawks domination as they cruised to victory in the final. Elsewhere Picnic in the Sky overcame Toxic Nynja Atack in an epic plate final (after they failed to here the hooter that was supposed to end their confrontation). And topping the bottom 10 in their first ever tournament was Northern Lights who seemed to cope best with number of games expected of the bottom 10 on Sunday. I would also like to mention the fantastic spirit. It was summed up for me when at the end of the tournament, when I was approached by the ice cream vendor who confessed that he could not understand how it was possible that so many teams could play so competitively without ever saying a cross word to each other. Special thanks must go to Kieran Taylor for organising all the Leicester side of things, to all of the Jesters team for providing accomodation and helping with setting eveything up and also to Chris Hughes and Sarah (Bears) for help with the schedule both before and during the tournament. Most of all I would like to thank everybody who attended and hope that you all had a fun weekend.
