OK, time to join in on this discussion.

The question in my mind is what is women's ultimate, I wasn't aware that
it was a
different type of ultimate?????????????????

As far as I can see, it is beneficial for any team (all male, female or
co-ed) to play other
teams that will push their abilities and hence improve themselves over
time. An example
of this is the tour. The whole reason behind the tour was to push the
top teams in the country, by them having hard games for the whole
weekend as oppose to some easy
games on the Saturday followed by the hard games on the Sunday. From
the discussions
made so far, it appears that everyone is in agreement that male players
are generally
faster and this can't be changed. But, this would imply that women
teams playing male
or co-ed teams will be pushing themselves. I can only see that women
teams playing
in the tour as a good thing. The only thing I can see that is a problem
is that the women
teams feel that they would therefore never win a tournament and that is
a kind of
depressing thought, hence women tournaments.

I tend to agree with the comments made about the fact that there are not
enough female
players that want to play in all female teams at tournaments to justify
separating it at
tournaments. For them to have separate tournaments on different
weekends seems like
the best solution which is something that you are already doing. This
gives students
recruiting a chance to still sell the old 'it's a mixed sport' and then
those women who
wish to play in womens teams can do this as well.

As for commenting on the fact that the top teams not having female
players, I think Alan
sort of made the point. I think it should be noted that the women who
play in all women
teams are generally the best female players in the country, all of which
could play for
top teams if they were not playing for a women's team. I know of teams
like ours that
would have more female players had it not been for the women's teams.

Basically, I see nothing wrong with the situation at the moment. When
there are more
female players to warrant a separate tour and that is what they want to
do, then that
is up to them, but I think that they have a better chance to push
themselves by playing
in the same tour as everyone else. I like to know what the women would
think if the
men decided to have men only tournaments? I've not noticed any male
players say
that they don't want women in the tour because they are easy to beat!!!

I do agree that Universities need to help promote all aspects of
Ultimate, especially
trying to hang on to those people who turn up in the first couple of
weeks, be they
male or female. Keep up the recruiting!!
