I believe that as long as our > opposition are groups of ex-college friends (who might or might not be great > individual players) that get together at tournaments or occasional weekend > sessions, we will continue to dominate. I even agree with Aram, Scott and Patch on the desirability of teams being more locally based, BUT I don't think there should be any legislation for several reasons - 1. Ultimate has a spirit of freedom and most players don't want to be told what to do and in particular who they should or shouldn't play with. 2. However you drew up the rules they would be ambiguous or unfair in some situations. 3. Policing the rules would be a thankless task which would in all probability damage the BUF by upsetting a section of the membership and diverting scarce volunteer resources from projects which are seen as positive to a policing role that will only attract brick-bats. > If you look around at other countries (or indeed other sports) most > teams are comprised of players that live near each other and therefore > practice together. Then again, being good mates can allow you to play the game without yelling abuse at each other (no guarantee of course!) and that is something which I value playing with STAN. It more than makes up for the loss of competitive edge that we forego by not having team practices. > PPS: Del, I don't think that fragmenting the "big" teams is the right way > forward for British Ultimate. If we don't recruit young raw talent (such > as the regulators who were the typical non-geo team I dislike) how else > do older, experienced players pass on the "knowledge"? Olly, Doug, Ed etc were hardly raw by British standards but I don't doubt that they have learned plenty since the merger. Whether the merger was good or bad for British Ultimate is impossible to say, who can say what would have happened? ..except that I am pretty sure we would have had some more closely fought finals. Let me make one thing clear before I sign off, I certainly don't intend telling any of the Shotgun players who they should/shouldn't play with. Del. PS Sean, have you and Ingo and Conor started that Brighton team yet? :-) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Derek Robins | | D.J.Robins@admin.warwick.ac.uk Management Accountant | | Tel 01203 523523 x2710 Finance Office | | Fax 01203 524573 University of Warwick | | Room 343 Coventry CV4 7AL | | Senate House *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
