Let's run a quick lesson on logistics...

Leicester: 28 teams on 9 pitches
(that's about 360 people spread over 18 acres)

Schedule: from last year, generally teams tended to play 3 of 4
timeslots on each day (OK, the top 4 did things differently!)

If the Tournament Director (and assistant) is also planning on playing
(and I would imagine that in '98 that the only one who might *possibly*
NOT be planning on doing so might be Charlie) that leaves them 2
timeslots to run around the other pitches/games and see what's going on
in enough detail to write a report. Is it really going to exhibit a full
grasp of what's happening? "I saw team X score 2 reasonably easy points
against team Y, by hucking - therefore it was obviously a hucking game
and X should have won by lots, even though I didn't know that these were
the ONLY two points X scored!"

oh, yeah... this assumes that the TD doesn't have to answer the silly
questions that always get asked, work out what's happening so that "who
plays when later" can be published in advance, and don't want/need to
eat or drink, relax after their last game, warm up for their next game,
find some more loo roll, deal with the local press visitor...

In the meantime, there's roughly 60 people sitting around between games
in each time slot, and most of them will watch most of a game somewhere,
and make comments about it... all they have to do is write those
comments down and give them to someone to print!

The other answer is, of course, to have non-playing TDs and team of
tournament staff.

I think you'd get less volunteers than there have been to write reports
for the newsletter.
- Then you'd have no tournaments;
- So then you'd insist that the BUF ran them;
- So they'd have to employ someone full time to run events;
- and the entrance fee would have to cover their salary...

how much do you want to pay to go to a tournament, and wouldn't you like
to have some opposition?

I know this all sounds a bit heated, but I personally take affront when
people without the knowledge of what's already involved start adding
duties to the TD list without thinking about it. As for the money -
sure, *I* make a profit out of running tournaments, but considering the
cash return compared to the time invested, it's a pretty poor return.

And what happens if I decide not to bother any more? The events would
still happen, somewhere, I hope, but someone else would have to bear the
flak of the ignorant statements!

So then, if you got this far, what's the chance of some of you
spectators taking a pen and paper to the next game you watch, and
writing down some observations? If you give them to the TD, or Si Hill
(sorry Si!), you're almost guaranteed that they'll get printed - and
you'll be famous for your help, and not for just provoking emails from
pissed off people!

Pretty please?
