The semis were a great spectacle once again, with Catch v Chevron in the 5.15 slot and Shotgun v UTI under floodlights at 7.15. The Catch, Chevvy Semi was a slightly one-sided affair with Catch taking an early lead and steadily building their lead to the end. Sorry but I don't actually know the score. In the Gun v UTI Semi, a spectacular battle ensued and the small crowd who braved a rapidly cooling evening were delighted to see a change in the usual status quo. I'll let Dave Murray tell the story... Aswell as being a grudge match from last year, a good crowd and playing under floodlights meant that both teams were up for this game. Playing each other for the first time this year, for once UTI had the advantage in numbers and it was decided from the start that the key would be to run shotgun hard and tire them quick. Because of their lack of players, and UTI's previous problems with zone, shotgun decided they would play zone throughout. This play seemed to work as some stupid passes by UTI and some great offence by shotgun gave them a 5-1 lead. A UTI time out gave some time to sort things out and the come back started. UTI defence stepped up and this started to really tire the shotgun players who were know really having to work to get free. gradually the game was pulled back with UTI leading 10-9 at half. In the second half the UTI defence really started to show and the shotgun offence really started to suffer. Demoralising points like a rare point block on Aram (by Alex, I think - Ed), and some great catches on offence let UTI take a small lead. At this point the lack of players showed and shotgun players started to hurt with several suffering cramps and injuries. The game finished at 16-12 with a large knife against the zone to give UTI their first victory against shotgun, and I promise you it was greatly celebrated. The Final, again by Dave Murray... On Sunday both UTI and Catch 22 had to recover from the previous nights celebrations to play the final. UTI came out pumped and great team spirit and hot defence let them pull out a lead. the first half seemed one sided with a combination of good plays both on offence and D really demoralising Catch. Then when 11-4 down at half, when it would have been easy for Catch to give up, they came out fired up and improved their play several fold, looking almost a different team, gradually through the half Catch pulled points back and UTI faultered slightly but in the end the held their heads and teh first half lead proved too much, UTI running out winners 21-16. Looking good for next year with two younger squads coming through to challenge for top honours and hopefully finally give Shotgun something to worry about. Great tournament by all spirit in both games was high with not one contested call in either of these big games. MVP was won by Ian/Jock/Gynga/Sick Boy of UTI (with Paulo & Lee very close 2nd & 3rd respectively - Ed). Final Placings... 1 UTI 2 Catch 22 3 Shotgun 4 Chevron 5 Red 6 Headrush 7 Violently Happy 8 Red Shift 9 XLR8RS 10 Black & White 11 Blue Arse Flies 12 More Than Just A Hint 13 Have Hammer Will Travel 14 Night Fever 15 BGA 16 Mad Kows 17 Superfly The spirit vote was a three way tie between Catch, BGA, XLR8RS, More than just a hint and Blue arse flies. Next year's Open will be three day affair from 11th to 13th September. A lost property list will be published as soon as I've had time to go through it all. Thanks to all who took part. See you next year Nolan
