Three conventional rounds of individual stroke-play. Round 1 highlight, Sam gets within two of the Old Course Record with a 53, and led Derek by three. But it all went pear-shaped on Badger Hotel (New Course), and an eight leaves Sam 119 on the day. Derek's 59 gives him a four shot lead (115). Rafi lay three behind Sam, with Bud (123) fourth. The three women players had a close day: Ruth led the way to the pub with 153, Helen just behind on 154 and Ali in touch with 159. And at the pub, the idea of Jungle Golf took root. The plan is to arrive at a tee, then choose a number from the hat, and play to that hole! Brilliant, until you begin to consider Whitcombe's terrain. So, a little adaption was called for. So Sunday we play a conventional round (New Course again) with the top four players each with 60, save Derek who went two shots better. Tom Soper's 63 also deserves mention. During lunch I vented my spleen poring over the course map, emerging with a titanic new course of just 10 holes. For those who know the course, one hole started at the end of the fourth (New Course) and finished at the bottom of Bunny Valley. Another started at the 6th Tee on the New Course, and finished on the short hole after Hypotenuse. You'll get some idea of it's length and complexity to learn that Derek averaged 4.9 a hole, and together with his group took over four hours to finish. Sam & Rafi did better with 47 apiece, while Bud held fourth with 53. Tom Soper continued his improving form with a 51, and Simon Ailes made a late charge with a 49. The women's battle was won and lost here: Ali and Helen each took 64, to pip Ruth who finished with 70. Final Results: Derek Robins 222 Sam Neilson 226 Rafi Freire 229 Bud Tilton 236 Tom Soper 252 Toby Green 259 Matt Pike 265 Simon Ailes 266 Steve Parker 273 Lindsay Parkin277 Helen Myers 301 Ali Locke 304 Ruth Lissaman 305 Also competed: Neal Pickett 212 (3 rounds) Pete Monk 127 (2 rounds) Phil Sweeney 168 (2 rounds) Many thanks to all who made it. The event raised 262 for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Next Whitcombe Golf Tournament - February 1997 (unless I get a rush of blood to the head and organise something around New Year!!)
